
From Frontier to Discoveries: AAPG conference explores Namibia’s Journey to Major Oil and Gas Discoveries
Shell attended the AAPG Conference hosted by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists on 22 - 24 July 2024, currently ranked as the world’s largest professional geological society.

Shell Namibia’s Principal Exploration Geoscientist, Rikkert Moeys, presented a Keynote talk on; “Unlocking the Orange Basin – From a Single Frontier Exploration Well to a multi-year Drilling Campaign”. He covered Shell’s ability to navigate the complexities of frontier exploration. What started as a single frontier exploration well has now evolved into a multi-year drilling campaign, showcasing Shell’s strategic vision and technical expertise.
Attendees at the AAPG Conference had the opportunity to learn insights on exploring the Orange Basin. Detailed in-depth sessions were held covering the Petroleum Systems, Source Rocks and Reservoirs. The platform provided a chance for industry professionals to gain a comprehensive understanding of Shell’s approach and the potential that this frontier region holds for the future exploration work in the Orange basin.
The conference concluded with a meet and greet session hosted by Petrofund for young professionals in the industry with different experienced leaders from the industry. From Shell’s end, Shell Namibia Country Chair Eduardo Rodriguez, Senior Commercial Lead Chris Mansfield and Principal Exploration Geologist Rikkert Moeys had the privilege of interacting with these young professionals. All agreed that It was inspiring to see so many enthusiastic and talented individuals eager to contribute to the future of energy exploration. Our industry thrives on innovation and fresh perspectives, and it is events like these that foster the next generation of leaders who will continue to push the boundaries of what is possible.
