Partnering with Local Communities | A New Playground for Orange Babies Namibia

The sound of children’s laughter filled the air in 8ste Laan, Otjomuise, as Orange Babies Namibia (OBNAM) unveiled a new playground. This joyful moment was made possible through the support of Shell Namibia and its joint venture partners, QatarEnergy and NAMCOR, and reflects a shared commitment to creating opportunities where they matter most.

The new play area is more than a place to play, it’s a safe, engaging space that supports physical development and early learning, giving children the freedom to grow, explore, and thrive.

Shell aims to be a good neighbour by contributing to the well-being of local communities worldwide. Since 2016, Shell Namibia has supported Orange Babies Namibia in its mission to provide care, education, and empowerment to children in underserved communities. The early childhood development centre currently supports 40 children and reaches more than 250 others through its after-school tutoring and peer education programme.

This latest initiative builds on a partnership grounded in trust, compassion, and shared purpose. It is a clear example of how collaboration can create lasting impact.

The inauguration brought together the Shell Namibia team, the Orange Babies Namibia Board, and dedicated staff, each playing a role in turning a shared vision into reality. It was a day of connection and commitment, and a reminder of what’s possible when people unite around a common goal.

Taffy Chirunda, Chairperson of Orange Babies Namibia, remarked,

“We are proud to witness how our relationship with Shell Namibia has grown, rooted in mutual trust, shared impact, and the courage to show up when it matters most. During COVID-19, Shell stood with Namibia, supporting thousands of families in Otjomuise. Today, they continue to stand with our children and our communities.”

She added, “This is not just a construction. This is not just a playground. This is a powerful tool for child development. Orange Babies Otjomuise has evolved into more than just an ECD centre, it has become a true community hub. The centre not only provides foundational early learning but also delivers health interventions and offers a safe environment for secondary school learners to study and gain essential life skills.

The recent construction has created a more conducive space for supporting parents, caregivers, and the broader community.”

“When we invest in children, we invest in the future of our communities,” said Eduardo Rodriguez the Country Chair of Shell Namibia. “What makes this initiative truly meaningful is the passion and dedication of the Orange Babies team, led by Richelle Cloete, and the commitment of our own Shell Namibia staff. Their energy and care inspire us to keep doing more—together.”
